Book Review – The Biscuiteers Book of Iced Biscuits

December 1, 2012

Prepare to enter biscuit heaven with this compendium of iced delights. This book is icing as an art form and is brought to you by the icing queens themselves the Biscuiteers, Harriet Hastings and Sarah Moore.

The book is crammed with fabulous designs and ideas as well as in-depth tutorials to achieve the very best results. there are recipes for various different types of biscuit as well as various royal icing recipes and detailed information on choosing the best food colourings and tools for the job.

The book was first released in 2010 and is now available as a paperback with 12 beautiful new spreads. The book passes on all the knowledge that is used daily in the Biscuiteers boutique in West london, and I think a little selection of iced biscuits would make the perfect gift. There are ideas for all ages and events, including some great christmas themed ideas.

Highlights for me include the biscuit advent calendar and safari animals which I know my girls would love. There are 8 pages of templates at the back of the book to help you along your way.

If like me you weren’t quite ready to give the more complicated designs a go, the instructions on how to get started are really helpful and you can use them to create your own designs and move on to the fabulous selection of biscuiteers designs down the line.

Never one to review something without giving it a proper go I donned my Cath Kidston apron heated the oven to 170 degrees and got stuck in. I used the plain biscuit recipe from the book which came out perfect and mixed my icing using the instructions from the book.

I used a few of my collection of cutters and following the piping and flooding instructions from the book did some of my own designs. For a first attempt I’m really happy with the result, and feel confident enough to give some of the biscuiteers designs a go next time. I’ll definitely be making some of the christmas ideas and trying some of the other flavours of biscuit.

052My attempt at iced biscuits. Not up to the biscuiteers standards but with a little practice I’m sure I’ll get there

You’ll love this book if you like baking cakes and want to try something new or if you like giving homemade presents. Why not invest in a few cute gift boxes and present some hand iced biscuits to your nearest and dearest.

I took my biscuits to a cake sale at my daughters school and they seemed to go down very well.
