Downsizing

January 6, 2014

As I mentioned in my New Year post last week, I am having a serious downsize. I have really stuck to this plan so far with a ruthless clear out round the house. Basically anything I don’t love or use is going. I’d actually like to downsize to the point where I have about half the possessions I started with at the end of the year.

I’ve always been pretty good at getting rid of things, but I wanted to make a positive effort to actually turn over every corner of the house and rid myself of unnecessary possessions. This can be pretty hard when it comes to the kid’s things every item of clothing and toy holds special memories of the girls being smaller. But at the same time they don’t need their old things and having a tidier house and the simplicity that comes with fewer things will be great for them.

I’ve been so lucky in that my husband has taken them out for the last few days and left me to get on with things, it’s amazing what you can achieve with a couple of child free days and I have managed to get rid of so many toys and clothes and a tonne of unused stationary (how do kids accumulate so much stationary?) Their toys are all in order and I have gathered lots of clothes to donate to charity. All of Jess’s nicer bits have been vacuum packed and put in the loft for when Lila is bigger and I feel very happy.

I’m on a roll now and won’t stop until the house is worthy of a Pinterest board or two!

I just wanted to take a minute to say, however little time you have this week, why not do something amazing and pack a small bag with nice bits that you don’t really want or need and run them round to your local charity shop. Not only will you free up some space, but you will also be helping a charity who really need your donations.

It’s healthy to edit our lives. As a society, we buy and store too much. Giving away the excess is good for the charities we donate to and for our simpler lives. Nice post.

That really is one of the nicest and most important things we can do to help others in our community at a local level. I thrift a lot, but I frequently donate gently used clothing and household items to the same shops as well. It’s good to balance the scales on both sides. 🙂

Sometimes when we find ourselves in the position of being able to help others it is one of the best feelings in the world. The fact that you got a two in one with a tidy house is an added bonus 😀
