May Birchbox Review

May 26, 2014

I’ve been subscribed to Birchbox since January, and had planned to write a review each month of all the things included in my box. However it’s now got to May and I have yet to do one review. So 5 boxes in I’m finally getting round to it.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Birchbox, it’s  a monthly beauty box which you subscribe to in the same way as you would a magazine. When you first sign up you fill out some details about yourself and your beauty requirements and every month you receive a selection of sample sized high end beauty products as well as the occasional food size. There are also bonus items which often include a food item occasionally. There is also a monthly mini magazine which is a useful little read.

Some boxes have definitely been better than others, but at £10 a box I’ve always been pretty happy. The May box is by far my absolute favourite. Not only is the box really pretty the contents are also fantastic. I’m not going to write a full review for each product just a brief description and my first impressions.

Firstly there was a sample size Benefit They’re Real mascara. I’ve wanted to try this for ages, but I’m really fussy about mascaras so didn’t want to spend £19.50 on a full size one and risk not liking it. When it comes to mascara I want something thats going to do everything, I want volume, separation and length and a really dark black colour. This definitely ticked all the boxes. When this ones run out I’ll definitely be re-buying.

Next was a full size Soigné Nail Lacquer, this isn’t a brand I was familiar with but I was delighted to get a full size product which would normally cost £11. The colour is a really pretty classic pink shade and is perfect for a subtle everyday shade. it’s also non toxic which is a big plus for me. The packaging is gorgeous and I like that it came in a little box for that touch of luxury. This went on nicely in two coats and I’ll definitely use this one a lot.

Then there was an Aromatherapy Associates Revive Morning Bath and Shower Oil. This lovely blend of essential oils smells absolutely divine. The bottle is tiny but I’m sure I’ll get a couple of uses out of it. I haven’t actually used this in the bath yet, just sniffed it a lot so I can’t say how well it works yet, but I love it for the scent alone. A full sized bottle is £39 so however much I love the smell I doubt very much it will be a repurchase at the moment.

There was also a little treat for my hair in the box. A Beauty Protector Shampoo and Conditioner set. These luxury hair products are absolutely divine. After using them my hair looked and felt absolutely amazing. The smell is also gorgeous and gave me that fresh from the salon feeling. Again I was really impressed. I also loved the lack of chemicals and use of natural ingredients. Full size bottles of these cost £14 each.

Lastly was a product I have heard so much about and was desperate to try. I’ve seen so many reviews of The Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser and they’ve all sung it’s praises. I’m a huge fan of hot cloth cleansers anyway and this one is fantastic. I found it took all my makeup off easily and left my skin feeling clean and refreshed.

Well done Birchbox you did good! I’m so happy with my little treats and the value for money this month. I feel well and truly pampered.

As a bonus this months box also came with an amazing subscription offer for Harpers Bazaar, offering 12 issues for £12 – Amazing!

I’ll try and do a monthly Birchbox review from now on. If you’d like to get your hands on your own subscription, check out the Birchbox website here. *this is my ‘refer a friend’ link.

I just found your blog because of the post on Sprinkle of Glitter about her monthly advertisers – I’ve already made it all the way back to posts from May. Although I can’t craft for anything (the idea of making my own cupcake candles out of tea lights sounds rather daunting), I love seeing posts featuring cute projects like yours. Maybe it’ll rub off on me!

I love that Benefit mascara, too, it’s everything that I could ever want, so I’ve managed to look over the fact that it’s a plastic wand (which I normally don’t like).
I’ve been considering purchasing a subscription box because I think it would be a nice monthly treat for me and good, regular content for my blog. Seeing a good box like this one makes me feel a little bit better about the spend.

    Thanks for sharing!
