A Day Out at Atomic Festival

May 6, 2015

Last weekend Rob and I headed to Sywell Aerodrome near Northampton for a day out at Atomic Festival. I’ve not really been to any vintage themed festivals, despite being a big fan of all things vintage. This year I decided to go to as many events as possible and Atomic was a great way to kick off what I hope will be the first of many great days out.

Atomic Festival Classic Pick up Trucks

We decided to just go for the day on Sunday rather than the whole weekend and we had such a great time. The festival is mostly Rockabilly themed and this reflected in everyone’s fantastic outfits as well as the music and amazing cars on display. We decided to leave the kids at home, however if you are going as a family there was absolutely loads to keep little ones entertained.

Atomic Festival Drag Racing

We spent most of the day watching the drag racing which was so much fun and some of the hot rods that were racing were absolutely amazing. The racing went on for most of the day and was a real highlight for us.

I wore one of my favourite vintage dresses, an original 1950s dress with a fantastic mid-century print. I wore it with a hand knitted cardigan from a charity shop, original 50s seamed stockings and some of my new shoes from Primark. It was so windy that my hair got ruined almost instantly!

If you like classic cars, then you’ll love Atomic. So many of the visitors bought their amazing vehicles along to show off and we loved looking at all of them. There was even a little car cruise and it was great seeing everyone dressed up in their vintage outfits in their amazing cars.

There were also some fantastic displays from some vintage aeroplanes. Some of the stunts they did were absolutely incredible. Those pilots are absolutely fearless!

Atomic Festival Plane Display

If planes and cars aren’t your thing then maybe poodles and jive are! They had a poodle competition and a jive contest in one of the hangars. The poodles were absolutely adorable and the dancers were absolutely brilliant. It made me want to learn to dance myself. I might have to take some lessons so that I can join in with all the dancing next time.

There was also lots of music throughout the day, with a wide selection of fantastic bands and singers as well as DJs playing music for everyone to show off their dance skills to.

Throughout the day there was also a massive shopping area. There were so many stalls selling both report and original vintage and some of favourites brands had stalls there. For once I wasn’t buying anything as I just wanted to enjoy everything else and not carry loads of shopping around. However if you did go looking for vintage treasure then you would definitely not be disappointed, the quality of the sellers at the event were amazing.

I’ll definitely be returning to Atomic next year, but I think in the meantime I’m going to invest in some dance lessons as I think I’d enjoy joining in more than watching everyone else swinging out on the dance floor.

I took so many pictures of all the amazing cars, but I’m going to save them for another post so watch this space!

How fabulously fun! I love that there were dogs involved at this event. I don’t believe I’ve seen that before at a car show or similar. I bet that made the day even more enjoyable.

A poodle competition? That is made of win!

Vintage Nostalgia’s the show I always go to, it’s similar to Atomic by the look of things but much, much smaller.

This looks like so much fun! I’ve never been to a vintage festival but I’m hoping I’ll get to go to Twinwood 🙂
