I absolutely love books, I always have. There’s nothing quite like buying a crisp new paperback and settling down with a cuppa as I turn the pages and lose myself for a couple of hours. I also love finding old books with inscriptions from the original owner and knowing that I’m not the first person to have enjoyed those pages. I’m also a big fan of scented candles. They’re something I invest a little extra money in, to get the best quality ones, that burn for hours and fill the room with glorious scents.

When I was contacted by Uncommon Goods to see if I wanted to review something from their website, I was instantly drawn to their Literary Candles. The candles are hand poured soy candles from New York. Each candle is based on a book from classic literature and not only do they smell amazing they look lovely too. I absolutely love the idea of candles inspired by books, especially since they are some of my favourites. I can already think of a few of my book loving friends who would adore these as a christmas gift. They are just one of many amazing gift ideas which you can find online here.

The candles themselves are beautiful quality, they come in mason style jars with metal lids, they look both traditional and modern and would fit really well in most homes. Soy candles are environmentally friendly and you can rinse out the jars and use them for something else afterwards. The candles have a burning time of around 60 hours, so there’s plenty of time to enjoy them and I’m sure you could read your way through a couple of classics before the candle has burnt out!

My favourite thing about the candles would have to be the fabulous scents, after opening the jars and before lighting the candles my room was already filled with the sumptuous smell, and after just a few minutes burning the whole house smelt gorgeous. Each candle scent is inspired by the book itself for example the Alice in Wonderland Mad Tea Party one is scented with white tea and the Jane Eyre inspired Thornfield Garden candle is scented with rose and rain water. My favourite would have to be the scent of black current tea and leather books in homage to Sherlock Holmes.

I’m so happy I chose the candles as I absolutely love them and I know I’ll get hours and hours of enjoyment from them. These come highly recommended by me because they are a beautifully presented, fantastic quality product and such a cool idea too.

Uncommon Goods sell a huge selection of eclectic and quirky home accessories and gifts. See the full range of home accessories here. If you like something a little different in your home, or want to get away from high street homewares then this is a great place to start. I especially love all their kitchen and bar accessories and I also have my eye on a few things for my bath room which I’m hoping to redecorate this year. They also have a great selection of art (available here) and gifts for just about anyone. The website is like visiting a lovely independent homeware boutique full of lovely products from cool companies and independent makers. I love that the website includes little bios about the makers of their products, which gives it a more personal touch and lets you know what small business you will be supporting through your purchase. Here’s a little quote about the company, which I find pretty inspirational…

“Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, UncommonGoods is a privately-owned retailer that endeavors to feature unique designs and handcrafted gifts created in harmony with the environment and without harm to animals or people. We run all our operations out of the historic Brooklyn Army Terminal, including our warehouse where the lowest-paid seasonal worker starts at 50% above the minimum wage. We make it our mission to support and provide a platform for artists and designers; in fact, half of what we sell
is made by hand. Most of the products we carry are created right here in the USA, and about one-third of our entire collection incorporates recycled and/or upcycled materials. At the core of our company is a great respect for the integrity of the creative individual and the belief that it is our responsibility to use our business to impact the world in a positive way. “

Want/need/love!!! I am a candleaholic and a perpetual bookworm, thus these are utterly perfect for me. Plus the fact that they’re really pretty looking is icing on the cake.
