Classic Films I’ve Been Watching

February 29, 2016

This week I’ve been making more effort to relax and have a little downtime. One of things I’ve been doing to relax is watching some of my favourite classic films. I absolutely adore looking at all the amazing costumes. It’s done nothing for lists of vintage fashion wants, as I now want to recreate all the amazing looks from the films.

Here are a few of the lovely films I’ve been watching…

The Country Girl:

I absolutely adore Grace Kelly, the classic film actress who became a real life princess. Her performance in this brilliant film won her an Oscar. The film is about a drunk actor played by Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly plays his wife. The plot is fantastic and it’s really set off by Bing Crosby’s amazing singing voice. This is a firm favourite of mine, that I will never tire of watching.

How to Marry a Millionaire:

This hilarious film stars three of my favourite actresses, the ever classy and sophisticated Lauren Bacall, the cute and quirky Betty Grable and the beautiful Marilyn Monroe. The film is a hilarious journey through the three ladies attempts to find rich husbands. I absolutely love the story line and the costumes are of course absolutely gorgeous.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes:

The book that inspired the film is one of my favourites. It went onto become a successful stage show before the film was made. The film version is a slightly fluffier version of the book, but I still love it. It stars Marilyn Monroe and as usual she is typecast as a dumb blonde. Jane Russell co-stars and looks absolutely amazing, especially in a rather fabulous black jumpsuit. The highlight of the film has to be the gorgeous clothes (of course) and the brilliant songs.

The Seven Year Itch:

Another of my all time favourite films would have to be The Seven Year Itch. The film is set in the mid fifties. It is about a man whose family has gone away for summer. He is tempted to misbehave in their absence, especially when a gorgeous girl played by Marilyn Monroe moves in upstairs. The film is clever, funny and has brilliants sets and costumes. I love everything about this one.

I’ve also been watching a lot of vintage B movie horror films, which are so bad they are brilliant but I’m going to save those for another post.

What are your favourite old films. I have so many and I plan to re-watch them all and discover lots of new ones over the next few weeks to share with you on here.

Aren’t the fashions in How To Marry A Millionaire off-the-charts incredible? I’ve literally watched it with the sound off (Tony usually can’t sleep if I have volume on the TV in our bedroom – funnily enough, TV helps me sleep!) just to savour their gorgeous outfits (and of course there’s always closed captioning to help with the words).
