Top 10 Things to do in Margate

September 5, 2018

I absolutely love Margate. I’ve been a few times now, but had my first proper mini break there with the girls earlier this month. There is so much to there for both grown ups and kids. It’s a great mix of old fashioned British seaside, quirky  and hip independent shops, foodie hotspots, arts and culture and gorgeous sandy beach. For a holiday in the UK or just a little day trip I couldn’t recommend it enough. So here are my top 10 things to do in Margate.

Top 10 Things to do in Margate

10. Exploring the Old Town

Top 10 Things to do in Margate - Old TownThe old town is a great place to find vintage shops, independent shops and quirky eateries. My highlights include; The Curious Cupcake Cafe, Peony Vintage and The Margate Museum. But there is so much there, it’s just worth taking a few hours to have a wander and see what treasures you can find.

Vintage Shopping

It wouldn’t be my list of things to do in Margate if I didn’t give vintage shopping it’s own mention. There are some really good vintage shops in Margate selling everything from clothing to homewares, records, ephemera and books. I’m including this with the Old Town at number 10 on the list, as all the good vintage shopping is in this area.

9. The Shell Grotto

Top 10 Things to do in Margate - Shell GrottoLooking for somewhere cool to take Instagram pics? When I visited with my friends last year, we got some amazing pictures in this fabulous shell encrusted undergound grotto. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Margate.

8. Turner Contemporary

I didn’t have time to visit this wonderful gallery on my latest trip, but I had been the previous May with a couple of friends and it was such a brilliant space. The modern building with sea views houses incredible exhibitions of contemporary art and is a real asset to the town.

7. Beach Entertainment

Top 10 Things to do in MargateThere is plenty to do on the beach other than sunbath and paddle. If you’re looking for a little more entertainment, there are a few little rides for small children, bouncy castles, a bungee and some old fashioned swings. the kids really enjoyed playing on all of these and they are perfect for little ones.

6. Food and Drink

Margate has become a bit of a foodie paradise, with a plethora of fabulous eateries popping up in the last few years. I took the girls to GB Pizza, which was absolutely amazing. Other favourites include Cheesy Tiger, if like me you’re a cheeseaholic and Melt for absolutely gorgeous gelato. I’m also a big fan of The Bus Cafe which I reviewed last year.

5. Mini Adventure Golf

Top 10 Things to do in Margate - Strokes Adventure GolfI wrote all about our trip to Strokes Adventure Golf on the blog a couple of weeks ago. As I said in that post, a game of mini golf is definitely a British seaside essential.

4. Tidal Pools

Top 10 Things to do in Margate - Margate Tidal PoolIf you like swimming in the sea, you’ll absolutely love both Margate Tidal pool and Walpole Bay tidal pool. Both naturally fill with seawater and make for a lovely bathing experience. The pools are also steeped in history and hark from the golden age of the British seaside.

3. Beach Exploring and Rockpools

Top 10 Things to do in Margate - Beach ArtIf you like to get back to nature on the beach then Margate is an excellent choice. As well as the gorgeous sandy beach at low tide you can find lots of interesting types of seaweed and lots of gorgeous shells. You could make some beach art like we did when wet were there. Margate also has it’s very own rock pools, a perfect place to find lots of little creatures.

You can hire a Coastal Explorer pack from the visitor centre, which I wrote about a couple of weeks ago. This is  great way to keep busy on the beach and we definitely found new ways to entertain ourselves while we enjoyed our time on the beach.

2. Dreamland

Top 10 Things to do in Margate - DreamlandDreamland is definitely one of the biggest draws to Margate. This theme park has a long history and it’s such a fun day out for adults and kids alike. I wrote all about my most recent visit on the blog. It’s the perfect mix of retro rides, modern thrills and family day out.

1. Sandy Beach at Sunset

Top 10 Things to do in MargateSometimes the best things in life are free and simple. Margate gets the most beautiful sunsets, they are simply stunning. One of the things I was most looking forward to doing with the kids, was making sandcastles and enjoying the beautiful sunset and I was so glad we managed to do it. If you go to Margate, make sure you take a moment to enjoy just how beautiful it really is.
