The Great British Sewing Bee

April 3, 2013

I never got round to watching The Great British Bake Off which is crazy as I love baking. When I heard that the BBC were going to use a similar format for a sewing programme I knew I couldn’t miss it.

I loved last nights episode which is still available to watch on I Player. The basic format of the show is 8 contestants carrying out a series of sewing challenges. Each week contestants are eliminated. Last night there were 3 challenges, firstly to make a basic A Line skirt finished any way they wanted, customizing a cotton top and finally making a dress to fit their assigned model. I loved seeing all the different ideas they came up with and what worked and what didn’t.

It was great to see a broad range of ages and a couple of men in the mix too. I can’t wait to see the rest of the series, I felt totally inspired to get sewing and make loads more clothes for myself. At the moment my favourite contestants are Tilly because I like her vintage style sewing and Sandra because she seams really nice and I loved her A line skirt.

The next episode is on Tuesday at 8pm on BBC2.

Ann Jane Lauren Mark Michelle Sandra Stuart Tilly

On the subject of sewing I bought a new pattern this week which is a reworked 1952 pattern from Butterick which I am going to make in this bright floral fabric. I’ve not been well this week so I didn’t get the chance to get this made before my holiday but I will get this done when I get back. This is meant to be a really quick pattern so if I like it I’ll make a few of these.

The TV show sounds fantastic but I suspect that down here in Australia we won’t get to see it for a half year if at all!

Good luck with your sewing project. I would recommend that you do some reading on the internet about this particular pattern before you start your sewing project. It’s renown for being an ill-fitting pattern. I made it a while back and have never liked how it sits on me. Many others have had the same fitting problems but I believe there are a few tutorials and websites out there about how to make it fit nicely.

Thank you for the advice. I have heard terrible things about this pattern too! I have looked at a few tutorials of how to improve the fit so we’ll see!

I’m really looking forward to seeing your finished dress – and the fabric you picked is so cute. 🙂

And isn’t Claudia Winkleman the perfect host? I love her! 🙂

I’ve only managed to catch-up half of the programme on iplayer – I’m determined to rectify this situation at the weekend!
