I’ve done a lot of browsing through vintage magazines recently. It’s a fabulous way to date items in my collection and to get lot’s of inspiration while shopping for vintage and putting vintage outfits together. I love it when I spot something similar to something that I already own.
One feature on vintage beachwear featured a straw bag similar to one I bought at a car boot sale last summer. Mine is sadly very damaged and has been on my repair pile for a very long time. I’m hoping to make it one of my next projects. I wasn’t quite sure of the date of the bag, but the magazine feature is from June 1954. Exactly 60 years ago!
One of my favourite things about the bag is that it included a little letter from 3 children to their mother dated 1963, I imagine the bag must have already been quite old when the letter was placed inside never to be used again, and leaving a little time capsule for me to discover 50 years later.
I love the other items in the article too, so glamorous! I’m off the beach next week and desperately need a big straw hat now to keep the complexion fair and add a little glamour to the beaches of Cornwall!
The magazine featured instructions of how to make these wonderful accessories yourself, so I’ve included them too. Maybe someone with a little more time and patience than me could give them a go!
