Stop Hoarding All the Vintage!

As I’ve mentioned a couple of times before, I’m a big believer in buying vintage items, enjoying them for a while and then passing them on. There are a few reasons I feel this way. Firstly I enjoy shopping for vintage, nothing to me beats getting up at the crack of dawn to get the best bargains at boot sales. I love to trawl through charity shops and vintage stores in the hope of finding some undiscovered gem.

However, I also believe in only keeping things for as long as you need them. To me vintage does not belong in boxes in the loft. If you don’t use it or wear it, it should go to someone else. The joy of vintage is that it holds it’s value so if you buy a dress on Ebay for £50, take care of it, wear it for a year chances are you’ll be able to sell it again for what you paid for it or more.

Lot’s of people have vintage ‘collections’ but I really don’t believe you should keep it unless it’s being used, when so many other people could get use out of it. And with vintage clothes now so hard to find and getting so expensive is it really fair to keep if you don’t need it?

This is all stuff I’ve been pondering for a while. Especially after I decided to part with my massive vintage tea-cup collection. We really wanted a holiday this year and just couldn’t afford to pay for one, so we decided to look through the house and see what we could sell. This started a bit of a selling frenzy which saw us doing a car boot and selling over 100 things on Ebay. We managed to pay for the whole holiday! (And I got a couple of new 1950s dresses)

I’m so glad I decided to reassess some of the things I was keeping because I loved them. I had so many vintage clothes that didn’t fit and so much home stuff that hadn’t been on display in the house for ages. It’s nice to have the extra space and a chance to do some more thrifting this year guilt free.

So my little challenge to all you vintage girls is to take a good look at what you own, do you wear it, do you display it? If not why not donate it or sell it and let someone else have a go with your vintage treasure. If you make a bit of money you can always get yourself some new vintage that works for you.
