I keep saying that I should share more of my original vintage dresses on here as well as all my lovely repro pieces, and now I am finally getting round to it! I have been collecting vintage dresses for a few years now and I’m hoping to get pictures of all of them. I’m quite good at clearing out my wardrobe and will often sell or donate my dresses after a few wears, otherwise I would run out of room pretty quickly! So even when things leave my possession it’s nice to have photographs and visual records of them.

Today’s dress has actually been with me for some time. The main reason is because I managed to damage it the very first time I wore it, so its been at the bottom of my repair pile for ages. Last week I gave it some much needed tlc and now I can wear and enjoy it through the summer.

The dress is made from lovely light cotton, making it perfect for the summer. I bought this one on eBay for about £35 I think. If you’re building a vintage wardrobe yourself, cotton 50s dresses are a great place to start. Larger sizes can be harder to come by, but if you persevere they are out there.

I’ve worn my dress with a flower garland, which I picked up from New Look a couple of years ago. I’ve teamed it up with my yellow Miss L Fire shoes, which I adore. My bangles are all vintage bakelite, I’ve been slowly building up my bakelite collection over some time. I love mixing and matching them to go with different outfits.

It’s been lovely to have a bit of sunshine over the last few weeks and to be able to finally wear some of my prettiest dresses!

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been adding lots of new stock to my Etsy store, including loads of lovely summer dresses. Everything dates from the 50s to 70s and there’s a selection of sizes. I’ll be adding new stuff every week so watch this space for updates.

I’m looking forward to sharing more of the vintage treasures from my wardrobe over the next few weeks, as well as tips on building your own vintage wardrobe. If you have any vintage related questions please let me know.

I’m feeling a lot of love for Voodoo Vixen at the moment, their last couple of collections have been so fresh and fun and I like the variety on their site. They aren’t producing the same dresses in lots of different colours, but have a nice selection, with a little something for everyone.

The dress in today’s post was an instant favourite for me. It breaks my rules a little as I never wear black, but I was completely drawn to the gorgeous oversized flower print and although this is from their winter range it is also perfect for both spring and summer. The Mabel dress is a classic fit and flare style with lots of lovely details.

The dress is made from a silky polyester with a slight stretch to it, which makes it sit really nicely on the body. The gathered detail at the waist adds a little extra details and gives the dress a slightly empire feel, while still being quite a classic 50s shape. While the ruffles cap sleeves have more of a 70s look. Whatever era you’re going for the dress is super flattering and comfortable to wear.

I was really happy with the length of the dress, which sits perfectly on the knee with me, as I’ve mentioned in other dress reviews I like my skirts to be on or below the knee as its more vintage appropriate and on me, looks a lot better.

As I mentioned in my last Voodoo Vixen review, I find most of their dresses come up a little on the large side and where I’ve gone for an XL in the past I’ve sized down and gone for a L. I’m so glad I did as this sits perfectly on me and I think the larger size would be a bit too loose.

I’ve worn the dress with a flower crown and Hotter Donna shoes. The fun florals and lighter coloured shoes are perfect for transitioning the dress from winter to spring. I also think it would look great with red jewellery and accessories to bring out the darker flowers in the dress.

As well as this gorgeous dress and the Gabriela dress that I featured last week, there are also a lot of new arrivals on the Voodoo Vixen website at the moment, which I can’t wait to try.

It may be absolutely freezing outside, but in my head its time to start planning outfits for Spring. I have acquired a few new dresses in anticipation of a warmer spell and one of those is the gorgeous May dress from Dolly and Dotty.

Dolly and Dotty Blue Floral Dress Review The dress is made from a lovely light cotton and has a pretty gathered bust and waist and a full skirt. I really like the wrap style at the front. The floral print is both classic and pretty and I think this would be perfect for a Spring vintage look.

May Swing Dress in Blue from Dolly and DottyI got the dress in my usual size 14 and I found it came up a little bit small at the waist. It fastened fine, but felt a little tight. So it might be worth sizing up in this one if you plan to eat a big lunch (which I always do).

Dolly and Dotty May Swing Dress ReviewThe dress is fully lined, which I always really like, especially when I’m wearing a dress with tights. I was very happy with the quality and as a bonus, the dress comes with two matching belts, which I decided not to wear with the dress as I quite like keeping it simple.

Dolly and Dotty OOTDAt £34.99 the dress is a great price and is perfect for creating a classic 50s style look. The dress also comes in a huge range of prints and colours and I would love to pick up a darker coloured one too.

I wore the dress with an original 50s necklace, black tights and Hotter shoes.

Every year the offering from reproduction vintage companies seems to be getting better and better. As someone who likes to mix between authentic vintage and newer, sturdier items for everyday wear, I can’t get enough of modern vintage style clothes. I’m also totally in love with some of the matching pieces I’ve seen for little girls. Recently Lady V London added a children’s range to their collection and everything is absolutely adorable. I was asked if the girls and I wanted to review a set of matching dresses and obviously I jumped at the chance.

Lady V London White Blossom Kids Dresses ReviewWe chose the girls a pair of Hepburn dresses in White Blossom and I picked up a Madison dress in the same print. We went for a lovely walk and took a few pictures of us wearing our beautiful new dresses. Getting both kids to look towards the camera at the same time is almost impossible, but we still had loads of fun trying!

When the dresses arrived I was really impressed with the quality and the lovely thickness of the cotton. When wearing dresses with full skirts I prefer a slightly heavier cotton as it always hangs better and washes really well. The print of the dresses was really pretty and perfect for hot summer days. I really liked the ruched satin detail on the bust of my dress, it gives a really nice 50s feel to the outfit and breaks up the floral print really nicely. The girl’s dresses are more simple and classic, which I think is perfect for little ones.

Lady V London Matching DressesSize-wise I found my dress very true to size, I went for my usual 14. There is plenty of room in the bust, so if you’re extra curvy this dress would be a great choice. The dress falls below the knee on me (I’m 5’6″) which is just how I like it. The skirt is nice and full, so would be ideal for wearing with a petticoat too. This dress is available from a size 8 to 22 and if you’re looking for larger sizes, the Isabella dress in the same print goes up to a size 30.

Lila Lady V London White Blossom DressLila went for a size 5/6 and the fit was perfect (she’s 5) and it had a little growing room, so it will last her a while. For Jessica I tried the 9/10 (she’s 10) and although it fits perfectly now, I’d probably advise going a size up if you want growing room.

Lady V London vintage FrillsThe dresses would be perfect for a formal occasion, like a wedding or a party. Or you could just wear them for a nice day out like we did. Even the geese came to take a look! The dresses are all machine washable, so perfect for girls like mine who like to roll down hills and climb trees!

Lady V London Kids Range ReviewOverall I was really happy with all three dresses and I’m looking forward to us wearing them again for an event or another day out. I love that there are so many prints available in the kids range and that there are several styles in each print in the adult range so they are perfect for mixing and matching.

I’d like to take a moment to welcome my wonderful new blog sponsors Dolly and Dotty to the land of pretty dresses! I only recently discovered this lovely company and it’s opened up a whole new Pandora’s box of gorgeous dresses for me to covet! I was delighted when the lovely people at Dolly and Dotty said I could have one of their dresses to review. It always takes me a while to choose when I want absolutely everything, but in the end I chose this lovely floral shirt dress named Poppy.

Dolly and Dotty Vintage Style Dress Review

What I really love about the style of dress and the print, is that it would work really well for both a 40s and 50s look. Today I’ve gone for a 50s housewife look with a petticoat and pearls. The shoes I’m wearing are an original vintage pair, which fall apart a little more every time I wear them, but I love them with this dress.

As usual I went for a size 14 and the fit was very true to size. The dress came with a matching belt, however I’ve paired it with my own belt for these pictures. The dress is made 95% cotton and 5% spandex, giving it all the softness of cotton with a little stretch for fit. The dress is hand wash only, but if you’re used to wearing real vintage hand washing will be a familiar chore anyway!

Dolly and Dotty Floral Poppy Dress Review

The dress fastens with a side zip which I always prefer as it gives a better fit and is more authentic for a vintage style dress. The dress is fully lined in a lovely contrasting green fabric. The pretty rose print is absolutely gorgeous and I like that it’s quite a small delicate print with a slightly faded feel, which made the dress look a little more like a real vintage one to me.

I’m really happy with my first dress from Dolly and Dotty and would definitely recommend them from my experience do far. I’m looking forward to trying more of their lovely dresses in the future. This particular dress and several others are available up to a size 24 so are perfect for plus size vintage fans too.

The dress is available in a selection of colours and prints, see the full selection of dresses here.
