DIY Decoupage Pumpkin Decorations

October 17, 2018

I love any excuse to get creative and try some new crafts. This year I wanted to do lots of different Halloween crafts, DIYs and bakes and also to try some new skills. I was recently given the chance to choose a few halloween themed bits from Hobbycraft and one of the things I decided to do was some decoupage. There were a few different halloween options but I went for a decoupage pumpkin.

DIY Decopage Pumpkin

I chose two large pumpkin heads and three different halloween themed papers. I went for the classic orange and black colour scheme. I’ve tried decoupage a tiny bit before, but never done any proper projects. Luckily you don’t need too much equipment to do this, so my overflowing craft cupboard is safe for now. All you really need is something to cover, glue, paintbrushes and decoupage papers.

As well as using decoupage, I also used some orange and black acrylic craft paint on my pumpkin to break up the design a bit.

How to make a decoupage pumpkin

1 Firstly I painted some of the sections of the pumpkin with my orange paint.

2 To add the paper, paint a little glue straight onto the pumpkin, place the paper on top and smooth it down with more glue.

3 Keep adding paper until the sections is completely covered.

4 Paint glue over the painted areas to give the pumpkin a glossy finish.

5 Leave to dry for a few hours, add a battery operated tea light (no real flames please!) and enjoy!

I really loved this one. It was one of the most relaxing crafts I’ve tried and would be absolutely amazing for mindfullness sessions. I put on an audio book and had a really chilled out time switching off for a bit and making this. It’s very easy to do and really satisfying and I actually ended up with a really cool decoration that I can use every year for halloween.

Once I had finished my orange decoupage pumpkin I made a black one. I painted the whole thing black first, to make it as dark as possible. I really like how it turned out.  Then I added a section of glitter, which was really easy too. I just covered a section of the Decopatch glue and poured on some black glitter.

Now I’ve finished both my pumpkins, I am seriously tempted to go back to Hobbycraft and buy a couple more! Have you ever tried decoupage? What did you think?
