Sustainable Fashion – A Thrifty Charity Shop Haul

January 30, 2020

As we entered a new year I found myself a little bored with all my clothes. I really felt like a bit of a wardrobe refresh. I did pick up a couple of dresses in the high street sales. All things I carefully chose that I knew would get lots of use and that would last me a few years. But what I really wanted was a selection of fun and versatile separates that I could mix and match and enjoy styling together. So I knew the best thing to do was hit up some of my favourite charity shops. It’s been a while since I last shared a charity shop haul on here, but hopefully this will be the first of many for 2020.

I’m quite lucky to live a short distance from a couple of towns that are absolutely full of fabulous charity shops, so I could visit lots in one day. It helped that I had a good idea of what I was looking for. I thought a few pretty midi skirts, some easy to style tops and some knits to fit the season would be ideal and luckily I managed to find a few pieces that really fit the bill. So here’s my little charity shop haul…

Skirts

I found 3 lovely skirts which are all the perfect midi length for me. A metallic Simply Be skirt (£5.50) that can be dressed up or down. A lovely floral Marks and Spencer skirt (£4.00) that would be perfect year round and a sweet embroidered mesh skirt from New Look (£6.00), which I cannot wait to wear on holiday later in the year. I love that I can style all of these for winter, but they will really come into their own in the warmer months too.

Tops

Although don’t usually wear black, I thought this lovely off the shoulder long sleeved top from H&M (£3.50) would be a great addition to my wardrobe and would go really well with things I already have as well as all the skirts I’d chosen. I also picked up a simple New Look top (£2.50) because I cannot resist anything yellow and I loved the buttons at the front.

Knitwear

I was absolutely over the moon to find a gorgeous 100% cashmere cardigan from Cath Kidston (£8.00) as they are one of my very favourite brands and the cardigan so fresh and pretty. I was delighted with the wonderful condition and know I’ll get a lot of wear out of it. Also I found this soft embroidered navy sweater from Warehouse (£3.50) that I’ll wear with skirts and under my pinafore dresses.

Outwear

Probably the highlight of my charity shop haul would have to be this faux fur jacket from Miss Selfridge (£10.00). It’s so glamorous and in absolutely perfect condition. For just £10 thought it was an absolute bargain. It would also be perfect for styling with some of my older vintage pieces for a more authentic look.

Accessories

The only accessory I picked up on this trip was a lovely black patent vintage handbag (£4.00). It’s quite small, so perfect for going out in the evening. I really love this versatile little bag, so expect to see it popping up a lot in my future outfit posts!

How I Styled my Charity Shop Haul

I’ve not worn everything yet, but here are three outfits that I’ve already worn from my charity shop haul

I wore the lovely black ruffle top with the embroidered skirt. I accessorised with a vintage hair clip, a vintage lucite necklace and some boots. The skirt will definitely come into it’s own in the summer, but for now I’ll be finding ways to style it even on cold days.

I paired the embroidered sweater with the Marks and Spencer skirt for a trip to the park and lunch with Rob. I added my trust gold vintage belt, a gold necklace and a vintage handbag, along with my most comfortable New Balance trainers to keep my feet happy.

I decided to go for all the colours for a trip to the V&A with my mum. I wore the yellow top with the M&S skirt and finished it with the cashmere cardigan and some trainers. this was such a comfy snug outfit and it was lovely adding some colour to a dull winter day.

Have you found any good second hand bargain recently?

I love how skilful you are at finding clothes and then styling them. That M&S skirt and the Cath Kidston pink cardigan are gorgeous. I love reading these posts, you’ve inspired me to hit the charity shops!

Aw thank you! I’m currently working on a post with some of my charity shop tips. Mostly I just work out what gaps there are in my wardrobe or what I’ve liked on the high street recently and go to the charity shops with that in mind.
