Saying Goodbye to the Iron and Hello to the Steamer!

November 5, 2015

I hate ironing, I see it as the biggest waste of time ever. So daunted am I by a huge stack of ironing that I’ve got into the habit of just putting my clothes away without ironing them and just ironing each outfit before I wear it. I still hate it though. The problem is I also sell vintage, and in order to photograph it, I always need to give it a good press first.

Teal Access Steam
Rewind 14 years to when as a teenager, I volunteered in my local charity shop (I was a very nice 15 year old). It was here that I first experienced the magic of the steamer. This bubbly fountain of steamy goodness may have given me the odd burn, but it also got old stinky clothes fresh and crease free in no time at all, plus it was so much more fun to use than a boring old iron.

Ever since those days I have longed for a steamer of my own, however cost and space made it a far away laundry dream. Until a few weeks ago when I was kindly sent a Tefal Access Steam to review. These days I turn down a lot of reviews due to being far too busy being a mum. However there was no way I was saying no to this, also I could use it on the girls school uniforms, no mum guilt there!

Clothes Steamer
When it arrived I got straight to work trying it out. I had a big pile of vintage dresses which had been waiting in anticipation of my new steamers arrival. Luckily given how impatient I am the steamer is really simple to set up and the instructions were really clear. So I had it filled with water and warming up within minutes.

The steamer has a flashing blue light which stops flashing once the steam starts coming out, you’re then ready to go. It takes about 45 seconds for the steamer to heat up fully and the steam to start coming out. The steamer has the option of producing a continuous stream or just when you hold the button down. I’ve mostly just left it on continuous setting.

Review Teal Access Steam
The steamer comes with two attachments for different jobs; the fabric brush opens up the weaves of the garment for better steam penetration and the steam cover filters water impurities and protects fabrics from water drips.

I found it easy to hold, it’s been very well designed to be light and simple to use, I also didn’t burn myself as your hand is kept well away from the hot steam. Considering I can’t do anything without personal injury this was a real plus point for me! It also comes with a 3 metre wire making it really easy to move around a garment with.

Review Tefal Steamer
My only problem with the hand-held steamer is that you need somewhere to hang the garment while you steam it. My door frames are too narrow to hang clothes from and I don’t have a shower rail. I was little stumped as to how to make it work. In the end I set up my clothes rail to hang the clothes on while I steamed. This was fine as I had a lot of items to steam, but for one or two it was a bit of a pain. Still better than ironing though!

This really is a great product, especially for vintage lovers, steaming is a great way to freshen up pieces which have been stored away and smell a little musty. It’s also a nice gentle way to get the creases out of delicate fabrics. Therefor because it’s easy to use, does what it needs to and most of all because I hate ironing, I’d highly recommend this product.

Where to buy – Amazon –  Currys – Tesco

The Tefal Access Steam costs £59.99. I was sent the steamer to review, but all opinions are my own (especially when it comes to ironing)

I’m a strange one as I love ironing (when I have time and in front of a film). A steamer sounds like another gadget to include in my arsenal to rid clothes of musty smells and creases!

It’d be perfect for all my vintage finds 🙂

Strange as this may sound, if a high spot like the top of a fridge or tall dresser from which you can hang a broom (or something similar) with a skinny, sturdy handle, that works great for hanging garments from while you steam them. I’ve done it before and it usually works every bit as well as a shower bar.

Ooooh I am intrigued by this!! I hate, hate, HATE ironing. In fact I avoid it at all costs and iron only as and when I need things and iron kids uniforms and clothes they need for week ahead. My main nemesis is bedding! So I now don’t bother ironing that at all!
So anything that makes the chore, laborious task of getting laundry crease free easier I am all for that.
Can you literally use it on anything?

    Hey Cat,
Glad you got used to it. I prefer to hold the button when streaming, I feel like having more control.

This seems way easier to use than an usual iron, a steamer its really worth it and it does the job even better than an iron, great choice !
